I came to this buffet not expecting much but don't expect the outside decor fool you. Arriving about 30 minutes after they were open on a weekday, I found the food fresh and better than average quality. We all started out with seafood, myself with some chilled seaweed and greens with lima beans, and shrimp and mussels. I was surprised at the variety of seafood and fish dishes my friends brought back to the table while I was chowing down on my first plate. They had like 4 to 5 different kinds of fish on their plates.I then picked up some miso soup, which was decent. Wasn't too salty nor too watery. The only thing missing would've been some green onions to round out the taste. My second plate was from their sushi bar. I wasn't expecting much and therefore wasn't disappointed. The tuna sashimi was fresh but a bit stringy. The pickled ginger was delicious and I thought the inari, or stuffed rice in tofu, was actually pretty good.My third plate was a little bit of everything from their meat sections. Overall they were ok nothing really stood out in terms of taste but they weren't bad. I tried out their teriyaki chicken, some pork, and one or two other things. My fourth plate was full of veggies. Their broccoli with beef was excellent though a bit too salty maybe for some. It was fresh, nicely season, and crisp. The stir-fried string beans were as good as they looked, crisp, with a satisfying bite ending with a bit of sweetness. My last plate was of fruit to cleanse the pallet. I wasn't expecting much because I figured some of the stuff wasn't ripe yet and I was correct. All the fruit were freshly cut and looked fresh. The strawberries were the best but then again it's about time for strawberry season. =3 The pineapples were also pretty good, tangy and sweet and not unripe at all. I didn't try the grapes but I did try the honeydew melon and as I figured, they weren't ready yet. Overall though, everything in their salad bar looked fresh and I'm sure if I had tried their salad that I would've enjoyed it.I was also impressed with the expediency of removing old dishes from my table. The price was really a bargain when compared to the freshness and large variety of food available. Most of the dishes were average but a few were pretty good. Personally, I prioritize freshness and variety when it comes to buffets. Without that, I would've probably given it a 3. Would definitely go again.

After deciding between China Great Buffet and several others in the area, I decided to come here based on the pictures. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this buffet! I have been to others in the past but China Great Buffet offers the most variety and decent quality food vs. price. Weekday lunch as $7.99/pp, I believe weekday dinner is $10.99 and weekends are $12.99.Sushi: lots of variety but your typical buffet quality (read: lots of rice and not very high quality fish)Soups: hot and sour, egg drop, miso, and especially liked their Fuzhou fish balls with filling in the middle! Yum.Seafood: baked salmon, basa filet, crawfish, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, etc.Cold dishes: seaweed had a funny aftertaste, pickled cucumbers were goodDesserts: ice cream, cheesecake, fruits, jello... not a fan of their dessertsMeats: teriyaki chicken, pork chop, orange chicken - your usual buffet fareOverall, pretty satisfied with the selection for the price! Will come here again :) I liked their Fuzhou fish balls, mongolian BBQ area, stir-fried seafood dish and green beans (just the right amount of flavor and crunch). Of course, compared to Vegas buffets, this one doesn't even come close, but compared to the typical Asian buffets in the area, China Great Buffet is a notch above the rest. 3.5*

I never thought I would be this impressed with China Great Buffet. We came on a monday night where the price was $10.99. At a buffet, their dishes usually taste the same...but not at China great. I started with king crab leg and crawfish. Sushi was just average..I wasn't expecting a high grade sushi. Miso soup was good. Orange chicken was good. Everthing I tried was above average. For $10.99 this is a great deal.Service was also good. The wait staff made sure there are no dirty plate and our sodas was never less than 1/4 of a glass empty.I"m a fan and will come back

China GREAT Buffet? More like pretty mediocre. Nothing special about this place at all. If you want a place where there are a variety of foods available then this is your place. I tried a lot of their dishes and none were very memorable. But I guess I really shouldn't expect much from an all you can eat chinese buffet. First and last time eating here.Observation while I was eating here - you know that roast beef you take by the slice? Well, a table of 5 nearby us decided to take the entire slab of roast beef to their table and slice and eat from there. Who does the that?!

Cheap, a-ok, AYCE chinese buffet. From the name of the restaurant, I already knew that this place would not be a "great" buffet. My dad had convince me to come here to celebrate my brother's birthday since it was cheap and had a good variety. When I heard "cheap", I instantly knew that the quality of the buffet would be lacking since its hard to make money now a days without lacking quality. My family and I arrived at the restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday night. It was very busy and there were many parties ahead of us that had large parties. If you do not want to wait a long time for a seat, I highly recommend that you come with a small party. My family was a party of 6 and all the smaller parties got a seat before us, which was very upsetting. The price of the buffet varies depending on what time of the day you come and what day of the week you come. Its $12.99 for the weekend, $10.99 for the weeknights, and $9.99 for weekday lunch.Food (2 star): This buffet had typical your Chinese food that is cooked in large portion without a care into the flavoring or quality of the food. For example, they had a dish that was similar to walnut shrimp without the walnut, so basically it was just battered fried small shrimps slabbed on with a large amount of mayonnaise. There was also a mongolian grill where you get to choose what to put into your plate of noodles (e.g. mushroom, egg, beef, chicken etc) and watch the chef cook it, this did not take too long to cook. As for the dessert, the best thing there was almond cookie, which is sad since you can just buy these cookies at your local Asian market. There was jell-o, a variety of cake, plenty of fruits, and Asian desserts ie coconut with tapioca. Drinks are not included into the cost of the buffet. The best thing there was the baked mussels. My family loved the crab legs but it was not king crab legs.Service (3 star) : The waitress was busy waiting on numerous tables but I give her props for always taking my plates away before I came back to the table with a new plate.Ambiance (3 star) : It was very loud in restaurant since there were so many families and young kids. We sat next to a party that had 2 kids that were done eating and just ripping a bunch of napkins constantly.Overall, I would not come back here again. The price is cheap but the quality was lacking.

Came here with our family of 12. Food was fresh and hot. I like that the trays were consistently filled with food. Did not see any empty trays during my visits up to the buffet and we were there 2 hrs. Pros: shark fin soup- flavorful, Mongolian BBQ- great service, fried breaded shrimp - fried perfectly and shrimp still juicy once u bit into it, boiled shrimp- it gave that sweet pop when u bite into it, service- waitresses friendly and continuously around to pickup dishes and re-fill drinks, black bean oysters cooked perfectly and not too salty, beef medallion pepper - tender and tasty, iicemilk was delish Cons: walnut shrimp - too dry, salmon sashimi- prefer it be sliced pieces vs. uneven chunks, outside of the restaurant not having much appeal but the inside is tastefully decorated, crab legs - dry.For weekend price of $12.99 would come back. I would have to agree with another yelper...Quality of food is better than Zen.,

12 dollahs for a dinner buffet?Let's give it a shot! This place tastes pretty A-OK as the food may be a bit too saucy or sometimes a bit too dry but for the price, you really get what you pay for.The service is slow as the servers look like they want to punch someone in the face and don't want to help you out. So if you're a thirsty eater, make sure you get a stock pile of drinks so you don't get parched.Other than that, I mean.. it's 12 bucks-- not much else to say.

I have been coming here since they opened. Definitely one of the better buffets in the area right now!In the beginning it was great but it went downhill from there for a couple months, that was when I gave them only one star... Gave it another try yesterday and although they still dont have oysters, everything else is alot better :)! They even have mongolian noodles now but even hometown buffet has that now lol. I love that they have shrimp though!I was going to givee them 4 stars but minus another star because their sashimi had bones and I poked my tongue... ow! :(

I have this thing where I get to places in the nick of time. It's always packed when I'm leaving thank God! They have a huge selection of food. I usually stuff my face with sushi and this last time I went they had an array of stuff! Everything is really good too; which isn't common for a buffet. I also noticed that they have a section where you can get stir fry noodles cooked fresh! Unfortunately because my buffet eating technique is to work my way to the back, I had already satiated my glutton way with sushi so I didn't have room for it. I was so heart broken but I cheered myself up by telling myself that next time I'm switching up my plan and starting from the back and moving my way up! Our waiter was also on top of things! This young man would come by to pick up our plates as soon as we were done, asked if we wanted refills, and did it with a smile every time! Mr. noodle chef in the back, sit tight because I'm hitting your section up first thing upon my arrival!

I have to say this place was very tasty. I came here for CNY celebration with family. I have never heard of a Chinese buffet in El monte so that caught me off guard. Although I didn't pay for dinner I think it was very cheap like $12-13 after tax. I can tell this place was good when I drank the hot and sour soup and it actually had flavor. Most places make it terrible but this place was good. I had the mongolian bbq, the sashimi, the seaweed and all were pretty tasty. I was very impressed with our waitress and she came often and refilled our drinks. We had two large tables and she did her best to accommodate all of us. If you do decide to come here during busy time, go early. When we left there were huge groups of people waiting.

Don't come if 1) you know there's gonna be only 1 or 2 of you 2) you expect the servers to be friendly and attentive. 3) you drink more than 1 glass of water during meal.Do come if 1) you come as a big group. 2) you don't care about service 3) if your glass is empty, you'll drink the soup from the buffet line instead. The first star is for the food. The second is for the clean bathroom. My husband and I have been coming here a LOT since they first opened in 2011. The food is flavorful and decent for the price. However, the quality of service has dropped big time recently to the point where we've agreed never to return again. Why? The servers had been very ignorant and RUDE! They ignored us when we were trying to get our drinks refilled or even just to have the plates put away. I am a slow eater so even though it seemed like we spent a lot of time there I actually didn't eat a lot. By the time I was having my second plate the waitress had already given us the check without asking if we wanted anything else and just walked away, and we were like what the heck?! We tried to keep our cool pretending that didn't happen. Then when she came to pick up the dirty plates from the next table I decided to ask for a refill for my drink. She took my glass to refill and then slammed it on the table. I noticed that they would be particularly at their worst with small parties like 1-2 people because the guy next to us was treated similarly and he was there alone. Next, it was my husband's turn to ask for his refill and again she slammed his glass on the table. Anyway, what we find funny is that when she brought us the change after we had paid she put down the tray so very politely and gently as if the money was gonna spill. LOL. Anyway, this would be the last time we ate there. The food is ok and cheap alright, but we think we deserve better service than that.

El Monte has an excellent Asian buffet and I'm shocked I didn't find out about this place sooner. This place is an absolute steal at $10.99 for dinner! Their selection is pretty enormous and the food quality is not lacking (with the exception of the soft serve machine). My buddies and I hit this place up for dinner and we were not disappointed.Their Japanese food mainly consist of nigiri and cut sushi rolls. The fish to rice ratio is fine, and the rolls aren't drenched in sauce. They served tuna and snapper sashimi and that was decent as well. Some of my favorite items include the beef ribs smothered in BBQ sauce, the prime rib, the endless sea of crab legs, and a very tasty French beef (black pepper beef) that went amazingly well with the green beans. Their coconut shrimp is a guilty pleasure, but a little too sweet. Their orange chicken has a bomb crispy breading too, but you're mainly going to get breading. They have a Mongolian BBQ grill that was very busy when we went. They offer the standard soups (hot and sour, clam chowder, miso, egg drop), desserts, baked fish and salmon, mussels, clams, and even craw fish! I'm positive that you will find something to enjoy and chow down on if you are into Asian buffets. This place has a lot going for it and I wouldn't mind coming back every other Tuesday after a long day of community service!

If I could give negative stars I would give this place a negative 5. Since our party was Hispanic we didn't get great service from the Asian waiters. We had to keep asking for refills. The food was okay but not great for the price of almost 15 per person. And the thing that broke the straw was that we found hair in soup, mashed potatoes, and other plates. Come on now!! Only a 10% discount but I highly recommend nobody to eat here.

The restaurant is very open and clean and its one of the better asian buffets that i've eaten at! The food selection is great and it ranges from king crab legs, coconut shrimp, clams, mussels, baked scallops and even baked oysters! so yummy! If you can't dine in, they actually give customers the option of buying a to-go box and stuffing it with dishes that they want to eat! good deal! (: I also like their variety of fresh fruits and desserts as well, but as for their sushi they can improve on that department because the sashimi tastes frozen. The service is really helpful and attentive here which is something you don't see a lot of in other buffets, but our server was always asking us if we wanted refills on our water and brought us new utensils if we accidently dropped our chopsticks or forks. They also clear the dishes from our table very quickly so that we can have more room to put our new foods. Very excellent!Overall, i really like this buffet and would definitely come back during lunch hour! Baked oysters are my favorite and they got plenty here (:

As far as typical Asian buffets go, I love this place the best. I haven't found something similar in the OC area yet. It's simple, yet good and easy on the wallet but not on the waist so I would be careful of how much you eat here.Sometimes I justify the $8 for lunch because if you go to another Chinese restaurant, that's typically the price for just one entree elsewhere. What makes this buffet stand out is that the food here is actually pretty good. I can't speak for dinner but lunchtime seafood eats on weekdays are worth the money. They have a pretty decent sushi corner with sashimi. Their Chinese selection is also very good in flavor. My top picks are seafood dynamite, egg foo young, chicken wings, CLAM stirfry, sushi, and most of their chicken dishes are good in general.Desserts here left more to be desired. I have learned to skip their "cheesecake", pastries, and what they claim to be "jello". Instead I op for their mixed fruit with tapioca and coconut milk (similar to the drink you get at Phoenix *this is located in the fruit bar), fresh fruits, and soft serve icecream.

Came here on New Year's Day and it cost $15 per person -- just absurd for a run-of-the-mill Chinese buffet! Judging from other reviews, this place seems to slide its price depending on the day and selection. The sesame seed balls -- likely freshly fried -- were very good, but nothing else stood out. The sauteed vegetables and stir-fries tasted fine. Fried rice and chow mein were particularly bland. The sushi section was a little worse than the platters you find at Ralph's. Tried the clams and kept finding bits of broken shells in my mouth. Oysters and crab legs were fairly popular, but I don't have much of a taste for either. But most depressing was the aura. The place looks run down and messy, and eating here just made me sad.Two stars if it had been around $12, three at $8-10.

The straw that broke the crane's backTo be fair, December was full of Chinese buffets, and all were terrible. Being invited to the China Great Buffet, I thought I was in store for a different experience, but sadly, it was the same as the other ones. Because of this experience and the ones before it, I will never go to another buffet. They are just all terrible. But, before I go into the negatives, the few bright spots were the wait staff and the ... well, I can't think of anything else. The carpet is dingy, the tables are old and sticky, and the food is yucky. That's the best word I can use to describe it. It's not gross, but it's far from appealing. I mean, if I was starving, and I've never eaten good Chinese food before, I would find it edible. In my case though, every plate I came back to the table with had food on it when I was finished because of stuff I just couldn't eat any more of after one bite.I've come to find out that Chinese buffets are just as terrible as American buffets. Food cooked in mass quantities and left under heat lamps is just not good at all. People shouldn't be exposed to this. We're better than this as a species to accept this as satisfactory food.Again, this review is more of a critique on all Chinese buffets in the LA/Orange County area, but the China Great Buffet fits in.PS: It's my experience that restaurants with the word "great" in their name usually aren't in any form.

I agree with the reviews that say this place is better than Zen buffet... at least they're not stingy on the amount of food they give out. For the cheap price (around $13 for weekends), the food isn't too bad and edible for the most part, but you still shouldn't expect anything fancy here, aside from clams and crab legs. The sushi is still the typical California roll variants that you would find at other Chinese-operated buffets, along with some regular sashimi like salmon.Parking is okay; they share the parking lot with a supermarket and other stores, so don't expect lots of it though; also conveniently close to the 10 Freeway for those of us who don't live right next door to this place.

If I were to compare them to Zen Buffet, I would prefer China Great Buffet. I've been to CGB twice, both on weekends. Let alone the price, I was able to get seated right away. They refill their food often. At Zen, they take out a few oysters and people always run and grab them. At CGB, they fill their trays to the max. As for crab legs, I do see people grab them quickly, but there is a lady who stands behind the food and she refills them quite often (Note: they only serve crab legs on weekends). They are always overfilling their fruit section as well. Not sure why they do that, as it loses its freshness that way, but it still tastes good.I love the variety of shrimps they had. Coconut shrimp, shrimp w/ other seafood, shrimp with mayonnaise, shrimp with corn and peas, etc. I'm not a fan of raw food, but I've been told by my family that they really like the raw salmon they ate. Crab legs were yummy. Ribs were delish.I gave it a 4 star due to the table setting in the restaurant. I feel they are too close to other tables. I had a party of 6, and it felt so cramped. It's a bummer they don't give out discount for birthdays. At least they are not playing that lame Happy Birthday song Zen has.

Food: BService: AAmbiance: B-Food: When I came here I targeted the cold dishes, the king crab legs, the broccoli, coconut shrimp, and the zucchini/ vegetable stir fry. The cold dishes that I usually get are the cucumber salad and the jellyfish salad. Both of these items are very well marinated. The king crabs legs are the go to items at any chinese buffet and man do they go fast. If you see them bring out a new batch attack and grab as much as you can before someone else does. The broccoli is perfectly cooked as it was crunchy. The coconut shrimp is a spin off of the traditional walnut shrimp, except there isn't any walnuts in it. Lastly, the zucchini and vegetable stir fry was not to salty and allows me to eat a little healthier at the buffet. I must warn you STAY AWAY from the SUSHI, it taste old and disgusting.Service: The server that helped us yesterday came quite often to take away our dirty plates and asked frequently if we needed to get refills on our beverages. In addition to that, she helped us bring out our birthday cake without being asked and brought over some additional plates and forks so we can enjoy our cake at the restaurant. What was very surprising was the server told us to take our time and eat some more. This was quite shocking as I would think that the restaurant wanted to be stingy and get us out the door asap.Ambiance: All I got to say is I could not even hear myself think and this in turn gave me a massive headache.Final Verdict: I personally think that this buffet is much better than the other ones around the area like Zen buffet and Gold Coast buffet. There is a wide variety to choose from and their food for the most part is not as salty then the others. Plus, the coconut shrimp, cucumber salad, and jellyfish salad are my guilty pleasures so I will be back in the future.

It was alright, nothing to rave about but at the same time it wasn't bad either. People were seriously grubbing on those crab legs. They were going to down town with it.Everyone mentions about the coupons, my family loves this place, wished I got a coupon. My favorite is their fruit / salad bar, I really liked how they had peaches and lychee. Some of my favorites.I'm pretty sure I'll be back again.

Not impressed with this place and if I could get my dad to stop making me go with him I wouldn't go back, but the damn place keeps sending out coupons and my dad is a big fan for deals. The only thing to recommend this place is that they have good hot and sour soup. The mushrooms range from okay to pretty good. The clams are sandy, the meat is overcooked. The only fish worth getting is the white fish - the rest range from mild fishy to really fishy. The quality of the crab has gotten better but it's not wow ... but then again it's cheap so you get what you pay for :p The sushi is meh and corn's not bad and everything else is unmemorable.Basically if you're broke and starving come stuff your face for cheap until your belly's ready to bust but if you have other options take them.
